Microsoft may be considering changing the release schedule for major Windows updates, and a new document now suggests it will start on a three-year release cycle for updates. Therefore, we can now have details on when Windows 12 might arrive.
Windows 12 may be released earlier than expected
A report from Windows Central points to several sources suggesting that Microsoft could release Windows 12 in 2024, which is three years after Windows 11 is released in 2021. This will happen while keeping the current Windows 11 up-to-date with new features.
This seems like a change of strategy, as Microsoft previously moved away from the three-year cycle it had previously followed until 2015, when Windows 10 was released. It then left a gap of about six years before finally releasing Windows 11. This happened after Microsoft announced a one-year release cycle for major updates for Windows 10 and 11, just like Apple and Google did every year.
It is said that after the release of the major Windows 11 22H2 update (expected later this year), Microsoft will begin a "Moments" engineering effort, which will ensure that new features are added to Windows. 11 (and future iterations) "keypoints" within a year, resulting in up to four major updates per year. This cycle will begin next year.
In addition, update 22H3 aka Sun Valley 3 for Windows 11 can also be released too. It is expected to be introduced in 2023, and instead of a proper update release, we may see features planned for this update as part of the initiative." Moments" (unofficial name).
